ザ・フー、スーパー・デラックス・ボックスセット『Who’s Next／Life House』9月発売

ザ・フー1971年のスタジオ・アルバム「Who’s Next」が、10CD＋Blu-rayのスーパー・デラックス・ボックスセット『Who’s Next／Life House』として、9月15日に発売されることになりました。

タイトルにある「Life House」は、1969年にピート・タウンゼントが『Tommy』に続くロック・オペラ・アルバム『Life House』として構想しましたが、結果的に未完成のまま “お蔵入り” になり、このアルバムに収録予定だった「Baba O’Riley」や「Behind Blue Eyes」「Won’t Get Fooled Again」などが、1971年の『Who’s Next』に収録されました。

今回のボックスセット『Who’s Next／Life House』には、タウンゼントが『Life House』のために録音したデモや、ザ・フーが1971年にNYのレコード・プラントで録音したセッション、1970年～1972年にロンドンのオリンピック・スタジオで録音したセッションのほか、1971年のロンドン・ヤング・ヴィック・シアターでの公演と、サンフランシスコのシヴィック・オーディトリアムでの公演を新たにリミックスした音源など、89曲の未発表音源／ミックスを含めた全155曲が収録されており、そのうち57曲が新たにリミックスされています。

全CDは、長年ザ・フーのエンジニアを務めるジョン・アストリーがオリジナル・テープからリマスターし、Blu-rayには、スティーヴン・ウィルソンが新たに制作したドルビー・アトモス・ミックス（アルバム『Who’s Next』＋ボーナス14曲）がフィーチャーされています。

また、ボックスセットには、タウンゼントが執筆した序文や、ザ・フーの専門家／編集者のアンディ・ニールとマット・ケントによる新たなライナーノーツを掲載した100ページのハードカヴァー本と、プロジェクトの裏話を物語る170ページのハードカヴァー本『Life House – The Graphic Novel』が付き、後者はタウンゼントが監修しています。

さらに、1970年5月7日に英サンダーランドで行なった公演のポスター（20”×30”）、1971年12月10日の米デンバー・コロシアム公演のポスター（25”×34”）、1971年11月4日のロンドン・レインボー・シアター公演の20ページに及ぶコンサート・プログラム、1971年10月～11月に行なったUKツアーの16ページのプログラム、ピン・ボタン4つ、サインが印刷されたザ・フーのカラー写真（8”×10”）が付きます。

なお、スーパー・デラックス・ボックスセットのほか、ヴァイナルとCDのエディションでも発売され、4LP（アルバム『Who’s Next』のリマスター版＋1971年のサンフランシスコ公演）、3LP（アルバムのリマスター版＋1970年～1971年のデモ）、1LP（アルバムのハーフスピード・リマスター版のみを収録したブラック・ヴァイナル、限定カラー・ヴァイナル）のヴァージョンや、2CD（2枚目のCDにセッション、デモ、シングル、ライヴのハイライトを収録）と、アルバムのリマスター版のみを収録した1CDヴァージョンがあります。
